I’ve spent a lot of this weekend watching Steve1989 open and eat military rations of varying ages from many countries.

Close to none of it looks very good, but it looks pretty similar to microwaveable meals which also don’t look very palatable.

so your into watching people suffer then. if i could choose between an mre and a punch to the stomach ( both somehow giving me like sustaining calories) ... man it would be a hard choice

when I read about the rations they issued when my grandfather was in WWII, modern MREs seem like a soup-to-nuts full course meal in comparison.

We just finished getting our Cub Scouts to send care packages to Afghanistan. We had to repeatedly explain why we were sending so much food.

The next meeting, one of the dads brought in an MRE and let everyone try some. It got pretty clear after that.

There’s no suffering - if anything this guy seems to enjoy a lot of it. It looks so awful...

I’ve been thinking about grabbing a couple of different ones to see what they’re like, but I don’t know which ones are “real” and not just Mountain House or Wiseman stuff in a plain package. I know the actual suppliers of MREs to the armed forces are not allowed to sell them on the open market.  at least w/o permission.

Some of the MREs this guy has tried say things like “PROPERTY OF US GOVERNMENT, ” “NOT FOR RESALE” and stuff like that. Apparently there are people out there that collect this stuff.

Rather than actually trying to buy some, I’d just stick with the videos.

The italian 24 hour kit actually looked god. And it came with booze.

The only way it could be more italian would be if it had a ration of wine to come with it.

The 1945 kit he recently reviewed was in amazing condition.  Fascinating stuff.

I haven’t had an MRE binge but I have had several “w atch Stuart Ashens eat out of date food of questionable quality” binges.

Is this the guy that ate the civil war ration?

Yep. The condition of it was amazing - the ones where the kits survive fascinate me more than the ones where everything rots.

They’re definitely available for sale, if you just enter “MRE” on amazon the top results look legit.

Go for the vegetarian ones if you have a choice, they’re consistently good and normally have peanut butter which is always awesome.

Jalapeno cheese spread or GTFO.

I used to seek out  MREs whenever I could in Afghanistan. They were worlds better than anything they served at the dining facility.

The suffering comes later. Eat of couple of MREs and you’ll eventually start wondering why you haven’t had a bowel movement for days. Some of them, or more accurately some of the various contents, aren’t bad. I’ve still got a few cases around, but it would take a significant emergency for me to want to eat one again.

I was thinking that what goes in probably doesn’t look too different from what would come out. I definitely didn’t think it would result in constipation since it looks like it would just give me constant mudbutt.

Anyways, I hope I’m never in a position where I am forced to survive on MREs, but I found the breakdown of MREs from different countries and eras to be really interesting for some reason.
